The Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MDM), now known as PM POSHAN, is a government program that provides free, hot, cooked meals to children in government and government-aided schools to address hunger, malnutrition, and improve school attendance.
Key Aspects of the Scheme:-
Objective: To improve the nutritional status of children, increase school attendance, and boost universalization of primary education.
Target Population: Children in government and government-aided primary and upper primary schools.
Implementation: The scheme provides a prepared mid-day meal with a minimum content of 300 calories of energy and 8-12 grams of protein per day for a minimum of 200 days.
Nutritional Value: The meals are designed to provide a balanced diet and essential nutrients for children’s growth and development.
Impact: The program has shown positive effects on student’s cognitive abilities, concentration levels, and overall academic performance.
Supreme Court Mandate: In November 2001, the Supreme Court of India mandated that states implement the Mid-Day Meal Scheme.
PM POSHAN: The scheme is now known as Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme For Holistic Nutrition (PM POSHAN).
